Sr Electrical Engineer

As a member of the Hydra-Electric sensor engineering team, the Sr Electrical Engineer (EE) is responsible for the design of new electronic products from concept to full production. Designs will require knowledge of analog circuitry, electromechanical systems, environmental factors, and the use of laboratory test equipment. The Sr EE will participate in a cross-functional team including engineers, manufacturing staff, operations staff, and management. The Sr EE position is highly independent and will be expected to assume accountability for meeting design goals with reasonable cost within a reasonable time frame. The ideal candidate will demonstrate creativity and innovation in their work.

Salary Range: $105-$120/annual

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Designs custom electronic sensor products that conform to aerospace industry standards such as RTCA DO-160, MIL-STD-461, and MIL-HDBK-704-8
  • Design work will include and incorporate printed circuit boards (PCBs), flex circuits, and integration with the mechanical aspects of the product in order to achieve highly miniaturized functionality
  • Prepares electrical design documentation including schematics, parts lists, simulation models, physical layout requirements, and reliability reports
  • Evaluates designs using simulation tools such as spice modeling
  • Prototypes and tests designs to verify simulation results and demonstrate circuit performance
  • Contributes to design documentation including specification reviews, internal reports, obsolescence plans, electrical qualification test procedures, and electrical qualification test reports
  • Participates in project teams and all activities related to the development of new products
  • Conducts research to support new designs as required
  • Coordinates with PCB manufacturers to design and develop PCB assemblies
  • Supports testing and root cause determination for customer returns and electrical manufacturing issues
  • Participates in technical presentations to customers on electrical topics
  • Contributes to technical feasibility reviews for bids and proposals
  • Works predominantly on-site
  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned

Required Education, Skills, and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (MS Preferred)
  • 5+ years of experience in analog circuit design and component selection
  • At least 2 years of this experience shall include work in the aerospace industry in a relevant role
  • Experience designing for RTCA DO-160, MIL-STD-461, and MIL-HDBK-704-8
  • Familiarity with IPC standards including IPC-2221, IPC-6010, and related documents
  • Experience with designing for power regulation, signal conditioning, and electrical transient protection of low power, small signal devices
  • Experience with designs incorporating signal conditioners, operational amplifiers, ADC/DAC, voltage regulators, low pass filters, DC/DC converters, and various other semiconductor devices
  • Capable of using electronic test equipment including oscilloscopes, power supplies, function generators, digital multimeters, data acquisition systems, and serial communications hardware
  • Shall be capable of using a soldering iron for prototyping purposes. Soldering technicians are available for support.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in PSpice or equivalent
  • Proficiency in MS Office

Desired Skills

  • Knowledge and experience with MEMS and circuit hybridization
  • Familiarity with demonstrating conformance to DO-254 and DO-178 for embedded systems
  • Experience with high temperature electronics design
  • Familiarity with parts stress analysis per MIL-HDBK-217 and FMECA for electrical assemblies
  • Proficiency in PCB design software (Allegro, Altium, etc.)
  • Competency in SolidWorks
  • Proficiency in LabView (or equivalent automation software)
  • Familiarity with strain gauge technology and fabrication methods

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk.  The employee is occasionally required to stand and sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
